I served my country for nine years in the U.S. Navy. It was there I learned that I must be a mushroom. Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) there calls for keeping you in the dark and feeding you a lot of bullshit - or, as we sometimes called it, chicken shit. Either way, it makes a really good fertilizer!
Having been given this "training" in the Navy, I believe I have a fairly well honed skill at detecting when this is happening. For starters, bullshit leaves a rather distinct taste in one's mouth. It's easily identifiable. Often, this is because it's not very palatable.
Being able to identify when I'm being fed bullshit has become easier and easier since there seems to be an ever-growing stream of it these days. And there doesn't seem to be one, single source of it. A single source would be easy to identify and do something about.
There seems to be many sources. Actually, make that a lot of sources. It's like a smörgåsbord of bullshit out there any more.
We get it from the government. We get it from business - large and small, but most often the large. We get it the talk radio hosts, especially the conservative ones. We see it on the news. We read it in the paper. There are so many places we can readily find it.
What's truly surprising about the vast number of sources and the large quantity of bullshit that we get is that the people "selling" us all this "information" turn it out like it's an assembly line and they also expect us to buy all of it.
This may make me sound a bit cynical about what I see happening around me, but I actually find the behavior and attitude of the purveyors of all this bullshit so much more cynical because most of them think we will believe it - all of it! Now who's the cynical one in this picture?!
Lincoln once said, "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."
These people seem to think they can do it ALL the time! With impunity. It's enough to make you think they graduated from the Liars' School of Persuasion, where the motto was, "The great masses of the people... will more easily fall victims to a big lie than to a small one."
I, for one, am going to stand up and start questioning the veracity of these many ill-begotten sources of "information" whenever I get that bitter taste of bullshit in my mouth when they start telling me what's right and wrong and how things "ought to be."
They want me to be a mushroom because they don't want what they say and do to see the light of day. Keeping us hidden in the darkness with their spoon-fed diet of bullshit may work for some and may work well on some, but it won't last forever and the winds of change are on the way!
